Black Minorca – Athos Menaboni

This lithograph entitled Black Minorca was printed in 1956 by a company in Atlanta, Georgia. At that time, the original painting was owned by Mary Mobley. Miss Mobley had an exclusive and famous frame shop in Atlanta and she had several different lithographs of Menaboni’s art produced in the hopes of selling them as well as the framing at her business.

Creating this lithograph (17 x 22 inches) was very different from normal printing. To produce it, the paper went through the printer each time a new color was added. Thus great care was needed to make sure the paper was meticulously in line or the work could have been destroyed. Today printing is much cheaper due to computers just using a series of dots to make various colors in a matter of seconds. Although not an original, a lithograph is considered a work of art.
